This individual has been one of the top EMS related call responders for their department. They give the best medical care possible until an Ashe Medic ambulance can arrive. This person is always smiling, never complains and continues looking at ways to better themself as an EMT. Even after medical issues last year limited this individual from responding to calls, they still stay active in meetings or fundraising for the department and it has never interfered with their willingness to serve the community. This individual has an excellent rapport with their peers at the department along with other members of the emergency services world. The Ashe County Hometown Heroes’ EMT of the Year goes to Ruth Henson of the Lansing Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department.
This individual spends many hours contributing to their department. They are hardworking and dedicated to helping others in the community in their role as a firefighter and paramedic. This individual never fails to make sure their department members know what to do in a time of crisis. They can be counted on to keep a cool head in a stressful situation and their positive attitude is contagious. Ashe County Hometown Heroes’ Firefighter of the Year goes to Dawn Zachary of the Warrensville Volunteer Fire & Rescue Department
This individual is a Field Training Officer that trains, mentors, develops, and coaches new recruits in order to help them have a successful career. As part of the Public Order Unit, this person plays an integral part within the team while deployed to events within the state during civil unrest. This individual is also part of the Executive Protection Program which is trained to guard the Governor and other political dignitaries to ensure their safety. When they are dispatched to a local scene, they are always helpful to the other departments on the call and always have a smile on their face. They are involved with the community and works hard as a member of their department. Ashe County Hometown Heroes’ Law Enforcement Officer of the Year goes to Trooper Ryan Absher of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol
This individual has been a paramedic and rescue technician in the county for over 30 years. They have dedicated their adult life to helping our community and has been there for so many people in dire need of rescue and medical attention. This person has missed countless birthdays, holidays, and family events to go to calls and never complains. Fellow responders have seen this individual shed tears over lost patients, celebrate life with the ones they have helped and pray with families of those who have lost loved ones. They have a passion for serving our community and will drop whatever they are doing to help others. Ashe County Hometown Heroes’ overall Hometown Hero of the Year goes to Ricky Roark of Ashe Medics.
